Here, in this content, let me provide several opinion considered as myths among the drug treatment activity. The different is, in this chapter i will put several myths to pay back my off time updating this blog. Ok, some people say that no body will voluntarily seek treatment until they hit “the rock bottom”, and you can force someone into treatment because it will be useless. Then, if you have tried for treatment to one doctor or treatment program, it means that you have tried them all.
Well, let’s talk the facts of those opinions. We have to know that there are many things that can motivate a person to join and complete substance abuse treatment before they hit the hardest part of effort. Pressure from family members and employers as well as personal recognition that they have a problem, can be powerful as motivating factors for an individual to seek treatment. For teenagers, parents and school administrators are often driving forces in getting them into treatment once problem at home or in school develop but before the situations become dire. 20% of adolescents entering treatment in the year of 2000 were self or individual referrals, while 11% were referred through schools.
About forcing to have treatment, i can say treatment does not have to be voluntary. People coerced into treatment by the legal system can be just as successful as those who enter treatment voluntary. Sometimes, they do better as they more likely to remain in treatment longer and to complete the program. Ten years ago, over half of adolescents admitted into treatment were directed to do so by criminal justice system.
Then, the myth says that one doctor or treatment is sample of all doctors or treatments is absolutely silly myth. Not every doctor or program may be the right fit for someone seeking treatment. For many, finding an approach that is personally effective for treating their addiction can mean trying out several different doctors and / or treatment centers before a perfect match is found between patient and program.
The second myth i bring here is about the opinion of ‘Treatment doesn’t work”
The fact is for sure treatment can help people! Studies show drug treatment reduces drug use by 40 to 60 percent and can significantly decrease criminal activity during and after treatment. There is also evidence that drug addiction treatment reduces the risk of HIV infection by the cause of intravenous-drug users who enter and stay in treatment are up to six times less likely to become infected with HIV than other user, and improves the prospects for unemployment, with gains of up to 40 percent after treatment.
There are some myths appear along the treatment of drug abuse. Here, i will put one by one myths that i have ever heard. And i also put the fact that i found in some valid medical resources. In this part one, i only put one myth and fact of it.
Myth: People don’t need treatment. they can stop using drugs if they really want to.
Fact: Well, it is extremely difficult for people addicted to drugs to achieve and maintain long term abstinence. Research shows long-term drug use actually changes a person’s brain function, causing then to crave the drugs even more, making it increasingly difficult for the person to quit. especially for adolescents, intervening and stopping substance abuse early is important, as children become addicted to drugs much faster than adults and risk greater physical, mental and psychological harm from illicit drug use.
I do agree from the fact stated, but in the world, there are some unusual things happened from the great will of some one. This is a story about my good friend named Sonnie. He was addicted about some years. Started from alcohol and marijuana until heroin. One consciousness appeared to his soul based on the great love to his mother. No body realized that Sonnie was drug addicted, no one aware about the signs.
Sonnie had to cure him self alone. Holded the pain by him self in a empty room for so many days. Built suggesty on his mind that he could make it right. He was half dying on that time and no body knew. He made it. He changed the friendship society and got bussy in business. After 10 years clean, Sonnie told me this story, i was so shock because what i knew, Sonnie was just an alcoholic. At that time, i was not Sonnie’s friend anyway. Now, He is free from drugs and alcohol, just by his own will. But still, it needs alot of suffers in the beginning.
Well, actually there are so many treatments available for those who are needing help with substance abuse. Started from residential program, visits, until family therapist. In United States, there are more than 11000 drug treatment facilities which provide rehabilitation, counseling, behavioral therapy, case management, medication, and many more services. But here i only put a few of treatment programs;
1. Medical Detoxification
Detoxification is conducted in both inpatient and outpatient setting under the care of a physician where severe withdrawal symptom a treated while the body is weaned from physical dependency. Normally employed as precursor to treatment, the process does not address any psychological, social and behavioral problems that accompany addiction. Further behavioral modification and therapy are needed to achieve successful recovery and long term abstinence. Meanwhile, Detoxification medicine is available for opiates, nicotine, Benzodiazepines, alcohol, barbiturates, and other sedatives. Untreated withdrawal can be medically dangerous or even fatal particularly with alcohol and Valium
2. Long Term Residential Treatment
Residential treatment provides 24 hours care in non-hospital settings to patients with relatively long histories of drugs dependence, involvement in serious criminal activities and or seriously impaired social functioning. The best known residential treatment model is the therapeutic community, but residential treatment may also employ other models.
Therapeutic communities are highly structured residential programs with planned lengths of stay ranging from 6 to 12 months or more. They focus on re socializing individuals to drug-free, crime free lifestyle by using the program’s other residents, staff and the social context as active components of treatment. Programs that serve youth also require patients to attend classes, so they do not fall behind their education. For adult, job training and other support services may be available.
